Family Reunited Through Adoption

Posted: Updated:
A Moorhead woman says her dreams are coming true of completing the family for which she has always longed. Gloria Hutson is counting down the days to the end of the month, when adoption papers will be finalized and one 16-year-old boy will come to live with her. But, as Valley News Team's Hope Hanselman explains, this is one family a long-time in the making.

"Everything is set up," Gloria says of the adoption process. Family is what she's spent her life working towards: the possibility to get back what as long ago taken.

"Thirteen years ago," she explains, "Child Protective Services had taken me and my siblings out of my parents home."

The CPS representative handling her paperwork asked the question she'd give anything just to answer.

Are you ready to take on this responsibility?

"Of course. He's my brother," she said.

Gloria is two weeks away from legally adopting her 16-year-old brother, George. At four years old, George was taken from abusive, neglectful parents and put into the foster care system. But, he never let go of the family he believed in.

"When he was upset about something, he kind of came to me and there was a lot of trust there."

Gloria and George fought any force that came between them, including George's foster parents who asked Gloria to stop spending time with her brother. Their communication got in the way of George becoming a part of their family, they said. Despite years of struggle, whatever pulled the two apart was no match for what kept bringing them back together. Recently, George's foster family threw in the towel and Gloria saw her chance.

"It's not a situation where if you do something wrong you could be out, you know. This is family. No matter what you do, you're still going to be here," she said.

Gloria is determined to give George all the thing she didn’t have growing up: a tutor, college tours, summer camps and activities, any chance he could get to succeed.
