Exclusive: New Info As To Why EERC Director Put On Administrative Leave

Posted: Updated:
We have new information regarding the Director of UND’s Energy and Environmental Research Center being put on “Administrative Leave”.

Gerald Groenewold was put on administrative leave last week. He's been director at the EERC since 1987, overseeing a staff of 300 energy researchers.

Groenewold said in another phone interview today, that UND officials still haven’t told him why he was put on administrative leave. However, he says it may stem from the Center’s financial problems.

However, we've uncovered a January, EERC memo to UND President Robert Kelley. It states the Center has been running at a deficit of a quarter of a million to nearly one-million dollars a year since 2005.

Groenewold says in part in the opening statement of the memo, which was prepared by his 2nd in command, Tom Erickson,  that quote:  “The EERC cannot continue to be successful under the existing indirect cost return formula” –unqoute.

The memo goes on to explain that despite the fact the Center has some 200-million dollars worth of research contracts, UND is keeping too much off the top of those contracts for the Energy Center to pay its bills.

In the meantime, UND officials remain silent as to whether the Center’s finances are the reason for Groenewold’s Administrative Leave and Groenewold says he continues to be mystified.

Plus, another check with the States Attorney and UND’s Affirmative Action today shows, there are no investigations or complaints of any kind, involving Groenewold.
