Businesses Downtown Have Mixed Feelings About the Fargo Marathon

Posted: Updated:
For ten years running the Fargo Marathon has been kicking up dirt, growing in popularity and this year irking some business owners. You're going to notice some shops downtown Saturday that decided to close the doors rather than cross their fingers for sales.

It's not the first time a big event has hampered business. For instance the ESPN Game Day Bison football game last season, brought around thousands  of people out. But more people doesn't always mean more business. Today VNL talked with some business owners that plan on remaining open on Saturday but they have very different views on what the outcome could be in sales.

"You know when the Fargo Marathon is on for a running store... This is (like) our Christmas week. It being downtown this year we're anticipating it to be as busy as it ever has been for us," says Jason Overland the co-owner of Beyond Running located right off of Broadway downtown Fargo.

"We love the marathon. It's done great things for our community. In fact I am running the 5k tonight. We're supporters of the marathon. But I don't know if it will be a great day for downtown retailers," admits Tom Smith the owner of the Great Northern Bicycle Company.

Both Beyond Running and the Great Northern Bicycle Company don't expect sales to be through the roof tomorrow. But hopefully the crazy amount of foot traffic downtown will get them a bit more exposure to new clients than a typical weekend.

For all the runners competing in Saturday's marathon, you're going to want to show up early. There will be traffic, congestion and one thing is for certain the race starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. so plan accordingly.
