Minnesota Fishing Opener: DNR Predicts Good Year

Posted: Updated:
With the Minnesota Fishing Opener this weekend one of the biggest questions anglers have ... what will the fishing be like?

For a preview we talked with DNR Fisheries Chief Don Pereira.

For northern and central Minnesota lakes Pereira says top walleye lakes like Rainy, Red and Leech have been really producing young fish over the last 5 to 7 years and should have fantastic fishing.  On Leech Lake they're even expanding regulations to allow more harvest because there are too many walleyes.

In southern Minnesota Pereira says t
here should also be plenty of opportunities.  Those lakes have been open for over 2 weeks now and surveys have shown high assessment results for walleye abundance.

Southern Minnesota lakes can also grow a good sized pike quickly so the DNR predicts plenty of nice pike to be had as well.
