Update: GF Man Holds Burglary Suspect Until Police Arrive

Posted: Updated:
A Grand Forks home burglary suspect is behind bars tonight, after the homeowner caught him for police.
21-year old Martin Carrizales of Grand Forks faces charges of burglary, attempted theft and criminal mischief. He was also wanted on 3 outstanding warrants. He allegedly targeted the wrong house on the 800 block of Reeves Drive, just after 4 a.m. today.

The homeowner caught the burglar in his house and held him for police.

I talked with the homeowner, who declined an on camera interview and says he does not want to be identifies. His wife told me that he’s recovering from a heart attack. Despite that fact, he was able to subdue the burglar as she called 9-1-1.

Lt. Mike Ferguson, Grand Forks Police: “The person was not trying to assault the homeowner. He was simply being detained by the homeowner. I think there was a struggle to that effect. They may have ended up on the ground. That’s a possibility.”

Ferguson say while everything worked out for the best in this incident, it’s probably not a good idea to confront a burglar.

Lt. Mike Ferguson, Grand Forks Police: “Encountering a unknown person in your house can be very dangerous. So, personal safety and family safety comes first, before property.”

Reporter: “Did the suspect have a weapon?”

Ferguson: “Not that we’re aware of… no.”

Ferguson also says this case serves as a reminder to everyone to keep their doors locked. It’s believed the burglar in this case, gained entrance to the home through an unlocked door.

Original Story

A Grand Forks man took control of a suspected burglar early Thursday morning until police arrived.
Police say a couple discovered someone going through things in their home just after 4 a.m. in the 800 block of Reeves Drive. When officers got there, a man was holding the suspect on the ground apparently after a scuffle inside the house.
Police arrested 21-year-old Martin Carrizales of Grand Forks on a number of charges including burglary, attempted theft, criminal mischief and three outstanding warrants. They believe Carrizales got into the house through an unlocked door.
Police say the homeowner suffered minor abrasions and bruising from the scuffle, but did not need medical treatment.
