Skin Cancer Prevention

Posted: Updated:

Melanoma isn't the most common form of skin cancer, but it is the deadliest. That's why health professionals are telling everyone this month to load up on the sunscreen.

May is Skin Cancer Prevention month, and skin experts say it starts with a morning routine. Apply a sunscreen in the morning before the day as rays can affect your skin both outdoors and in. Abbie Boyle a Licensed Medical Aesthetician says it's important to find a sunscreen that protects both UVA and UVB rays. Use a product labeled with an SPF of 15 to 30 or greater.

Abbie says the rays can even affect your skin through clouds or glass, that's why it's important to wear it every day. If outside skin experts say sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours.

One thing to do at home is use a mirror or a partner to look for spots or abnormal moles. It's suggested to do a monthly whole-body skin self-examination. Taking 10 minutes to check for spots could help catch anything unusual. If you find anything suspicious experts say to have it looked at by a professional right away.

But it's not all about the sunscreen, Abbie says taking care of your skin is just as important. If there is no time to go see an Aesthetician, there are a few at home things you can do weekly for your skin.

Once a week is the right time to do an at home Microdermabrasion for your face. All you need is baking soda and water to help your skin.

At-home Microdermabrasion

                3 parts baking soda
                1 part warm water

Apply in circular motion to face and neck for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Rinse and finish with moisturizer and SPF
                Once per week

Also once a week is all you need to keep your lips healthy.

Lip Scrub

                1 tablespoon brown sugar
                1 tablespoon olive oil
                ½ teaspoon honey

Apply in circular motion; finish with lip balm
                Once per week

But there is a product that you could benefit from every day. Abbie says a body scrub is a good thing to keep in your shower for everyday use. She says more that half the people they see have Keratosis Pilaris or "Chicken Skin". Using a body scrub will help with the bumpy skin on the back of arms and legs.

Body Scrub

                ¾ cup raw cane sugar
                ½ cup almond oil
1 teaspoon essential oil (lavender, etc)

Apply to full body in shower or batch to exfoliate
                Once per week/as needed
