Update: Groenewold, Director of EERC Put On Administrative Leave

Posted: Updated:

The Director of the largest research institution in the Valley tells Valley News Live that he’s stunned and mystified. Gerald Groenewold, the director of UND’s, Energy and Environmental Research Center has been put on administrative leave.  Groenewold had a team of over 300 people working on energy research.

At this point, UND officials are not commenting  on their action. A UND Police Officer was on security duty at the entrance of the EERC today, where Gerry Groenewold has been director since 1987.

UND spokesperson, Peter Johnson says putting security in place is standard operating procedure, when someone is put on administrative leave. However, he’s not commenting as to why Groenewold was put on leave.

Reporter: “Why was he put on administrative leave?”

Peter Johnson, UND Media Relations: “We’re not going to comment on personnel actions.”

Groenewold told me in phone interviews today, “I don’t have a clue why they’re doing it. I’m mystified”. He also told me quote: “Forty years of building something unique and this is the reward? I don’t understand it.”

UND Police, Grand Forks Police and the States Attorney all say there is no criminal investigation of Groenewold. And UND’s Affirmative Action office says no one has filed any harassment or any other type of complaint against Groenewold.

Groenewold says the EERC has some 200-million dollars worth of research contracts. But that recently the EERC has been struggling financially. Groenewold says he believes… that’s because UND it taking too big of a cut off the top of those contracts.

However, Groenewold says he’s not even sure if that’s the problem, since no one is talking. He also says his cell phone was taken. However, again… no one at UND is willing to comment.
