Exclusive: Sheriff Says He's Innocent of Child Abuse Charge

Posted: Updated:
A Central North Dakota Sheriff says he’s innocent of child abuse charges.  Last August,  Eddy County Sheriff,  Brandon Maygra of New Rockford was charged with felony “Abuse or Neglect of a Child”, in connection with the alleged, physical abuse of his stepson.

Brandon Maygra, Eddy Co. Sheriff: “I have been wrongfully accused. I’m super excited for trial. I can’t wait. It’s sad that it keeps getting postponed down the road.”

Sheriff Maygra is accused of using his open hand to hit his 12-year old stepson in the back. Prosecutors have this photo as evidence. However, Maygra says his stepson got that bruise from tipping over on his dirt bike, several times.

Brandon Maygra, Eddy County Sheriff: “I did witness Gregory crash on his dirt bike. He was holding his side, got up, by the time I got to the headlands over there with the tractor, the boys were back on their bikes and they were riding.”

Kathleen Murray, Prosecutor: “We shouldn't’t be discussing specific facts of the case, because that’s for a jury to determine at the trial in the courtroom.”

While the Prosecutor won’t talk specifics about the case,  Maygra’s wife, Deonne also says the bruise was caused by her biological son tipping over on his dirt bike. She also says they have a witness.

Deonne says, Social Services gave custody of her son to his biological father in Minnesota, despite his troubled past.

Deonne Maygra, Maygra’s wife: “I do, do you know that his father pulled a loaded gun on us, before he went to prison? She said it didn't’t matter.”

According to court records, the boy’s biological father, who now has custody of him is a convicted felon who’s on parole. He’s been convicted of drug charges and making terroristic threats.

Brandon and Deonne Maygra say, he simply coerced the boy into giving authorities a false statement, because he hates Sheriff Maygra, and he want her back.

Reporter: “Would you say the child’s biological father hates you and would like to get you?”

Brandon Maygra: “Absolutely, absolutely.”

Deonne Maygra: “This isn’t the first time. I had a previous relationship in between Gret and Brandon. He tried to press charges on him through Social Services also. This is not the first time he had done this.”

In the meantime, Sheriff Maygra faces re-election this fall with a child abuse charge hanging over his head. Maygra says he simply wants to get to trial and clear his name.

We also reached out to the boy’s biological father. He declined to comment.

Brandon Maygra’s trial is now scheduled for September, while five other candidates have entered the race for Eddy County Sheriff.
