A powerful offensive attack helped the North Dakota State baseball team (17-20, 8-9 Summit) to a doubleheader sweep over the Fort Wayne Mastodons (17-28, 9-10 Summit) Saturday, May 3, at Mastodon Field. The Bison beat IPFW, 11-10, in game one before coasting to a 12-0 shutout win in the second contest.
Kyle Kleinendorst led the NDSU offensive attack in both games, going a combined 6-for-8 (.750) at the plate with nine RBI and three homers.
In game one, Kleinendorst went 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a double and two RBI before going 3-for-4 again in the second game with two round-trippers while driving in seven RBI. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native now has a team-high three home runs on the season.
Nick Altavilla went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one with two RBI and also recorded a hit and a pair of RBI in game two.
On the mound, Parker Trewinpitched a complete game shutout in the second contest to improve to 5-1 on the season. He went the full eight innings with seven strikeouts and only walked one and allowed just five Mastodon hits.
Jay Flaa earned the win on the mound in game one, pitching 2.1 innings in relief, to move to 2-2 overall while Trevor Jaunichpicked up his fifth save of the season.
Steve Lowden paced the Mastodons in the first contest, going 3-for-5 with four RBI while Kristian Gayday went 2-for-4 in game two.
Zach Mishler took the loss on the mound for IPFW in game one while Dane Davis suffered the setback in the second contest of the day.
In the first game, the Bison jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning after Aiden Hooksingled home Michael Leachand Kleinendorst sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence, bringing in Wes Satzinger.
The Bison increased their lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth, plating a pair of runs on an Altavilla sacrifice fly and Fort Wayne wild pitch, but the Mastodons responded in the bottom-half of the inning, tying the contest at eight after scoring four runs.
NDSU broke the stalemate in the sixth, regaining an 11-8 advantage after scoring two runs on a pair of IPFW errors.
The Mastodons cut the Bison lead to 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but Jaunich got the final pair of outs on a strikeout and ground out to seal the Bison win.
The second game saw NDSU jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Kleinendorst's first home run of the game, a two-run shot to right center, before a Paul Funk RBI triple in the top of the fourth increased the Bison advantage to 3-0.
NDSU continued the offensive surge in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs. Altavilla hit a two RBI single and Andy Wicklundscored Kleinendorst on an RBI fielder's choice to balloon the Bison lead to 6-0.
The Bison scored another three runs in the top of the seventh on a two RBI single from Kleinendorst and a RBI single by Wicklund and Kleinendorst added the final three runs of the game in the eighth on a round-tripper to right field, his second of the game and third of the day.
With the win, the Bison improve to 17-20 overall and 8-9 in The Summit League while Fort Wayne drops to 17-28 on the season and 9-10 in league action.
The Bison and Mastodons are scheduled to close out the four-game Summit League series with a single game beginning at noon ET (11 a.m. CT) Sunday, May 4, at Mastodon Field.
