Another Radioactive Dump Site Found in Western ND

Posted: Updated:
The illegal dumping of oil-related hazardous waste in the town of Noonan, North Dakota was not an isolated incident. Health workers have reported another dump site north of Crosby. After the snow melted, a property owner discovered a dozen garbage cans and two dozen garbage bags containing low level radioactive filter socks.

"There's a lot of junk and trash out behind this shopping center on the backside of this property," says Scott Radig of the North Dakota Department of Health. "Some of that is garbage cans filled with filter socks, overflowing out on to the ground."

Despite the radiation, experts say the socks don't pose any major health risks unless someone gets close enough to touch them or inhale dust particles. The Health Department says it will ask the Department of Mineral Resources if the site qualifies for clean up funding, as is the situation in Noonan.
