Oakes School Locked Down While Police Search for Suspect

Posted: Updated:
The school in Oakes, North Dakota, was in lock down for just under an hour Wednesday morning as police were searching for a suspect in the area.

Oakes Police Chief Marke Roberts says there was no immediate threat to the school at any time during the lock down, which started at 10:30 Wednesday morning. He adds the school was placed on lock down as a precaution because the suspect was in close proximity of the school. Classes returned to a normal schedule just before 11:30 a.m.

Officers arrested Dale Smith for violation of a bond condition. He is now being held in the Barnes County Jail without bond.  Smith was arrested last month after he veered off of Highway 1 and drove his truck into a home in Oakes.  Smith drove through a dining room, living room, bathroom & finally stopped in a bedroom. A man in the home was hit by debris and treated and released from the hospital.
