What is it? Something 'fishy' being built in Fargo

Posted: Updated:

You may have noticed a new shop going in on the 700 block of 45th street in Fargo and wondered... "What is it?"

Well even though we're about as far away from the ocean as you can get, a local man has caught the opportunity to bring a little of the tropics here.

"Midwest Aquarium Services will kind of be a full-service marine fish aquarium sales and service. We do set up, design, maintenance, installation...we'll also do sales from this location," says Owner John Easterday.

He's planning for about 75-100 species of fish; live coral, live food and aquarium supplies - plus helping you get a new or used tank set up - even if that means building it.

"So we do a little interview, we see what you want to keep, what you want to pay for, how much you're willing to spend and we kind of custom tailor your system to your needs," he says.

Easterday is an NDSU grad who worked in several pet stores maintaining saltwater tanks and ran his own side installation business before buying these off of the West Acres Mall pet store and combining it all.

The store is being put together by John and friends and family. His fiancee Krista Ramstad says that effort is well worth it:

"It's been really cool to watch his passion come to life and to be able to support him in that," she says.

Easterday estimates there are 150 saltwater tanks in Fargo.

"Those people all need to get products on a weekly or monthly basis," he says.

Easterday thinks it's his knowledge and the store's selection that will help them be competitive with bigger chains in the area.

Midwest Aquarium Services is scheduled to open by May 1 and have the store completed by June 1 in order to get the fish and coral properly acclimated.

Easterday says they're also planning on an online store.
