Former Fargo hockey star needs an assist from you

Posted: Updated:
A former local hockey star who scored the game-winning goal for Fargo North High School in the 2012 state tournament needs your help.

"I was diagnosed with brain cancer...Glioblastoma, stage four," says 20-year-old Zach Kraft.

Since his diagnosis in February, Kraft had one surgery to have the tumor removed, but now it's back, and if plans go through, he'll be in surgery again in the next few days and possibly starting chemoradiation.

"It's only been two months and it's been a journey, already, that's for sure," says Kraft's sister Cassie Kraft.

So Friday night at the Teamsters Arena in Fargo, it's $20 to lace up skates against the 2012 Fargo North hockey champions. There will be a lot of other events at the El Zegal Shrine in Fargo, too:

"We've got a DJ that's going to be coming to the event and a silent auction, so different auction items throughout the evening...lots of great jerseys and options of things to purchase and bid on, so it should be a great event," says an organizer Sharon Klein.

Robert Aasand coaches the Fargo North boys team. He says along with community help, it's Kraft's spirit that will help him make it through.

"Whether it is in hockey or whether it's just walking down the street, he's doing it the best of his ability and the best that he can and with the situation he's in, he's going to fight it tooth and nail," Aasand says.

"Thank you for all the support that you've given me so far and I look forward to seeing you guys tomorrow at the benefit. Just want to thank you again. I appreciate everything," says Kraft.

If you aren't able to make it to the benefit, a fund has been set up for Zach Kraft at any Fargo Bell State Bank location.
