Scammer Impersonating Grand Forks County Deputy

Posted: Updated:

The Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a new phone scam where the caller claims to be a deputy.

The scammer tells people he is Lt. Brad McCoy and that they have warrants out for their arrest.

Jennifer Richardson received a call over the weekend when the scammer told her the warrant was for a failure to appear.

"I said failure to appear where? And he said jury duty." Jennifer says.

The fake deputy then asks people to put money on a gift card and call him back with the numbers on the back to have the warrant cleared.

"He was very familiar with policies and procedures, and the very first phone call caught me off guard." Jennifer admits.

Sheriff Bob Rost says people may receive several calls.  He also warns the number will likely have a 701 area code.

The scammer may also have your address and has even set up a voice mail that sounds legitimate if you call the number back.

"And the person sounded really authentic and that kind of scares you too." says Sergeant Dan Hillebrand with the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department.

He adds the Sheriff's Office does not have people put money on gift cards to clear warrants.

An investigation has started, but Sheriff's say the number that was used is not valid anymore, adding they have no suspects yet.

If you get this phone call or one like it your asked to hang up and contact the Sheriff's Office.
