Spring Health Tips for Fido

Posted: Updated:

Owners and dogs alike are looking forward to outdoor activities in the warmer weather, but veterinarians say it is an important time to bring your pet in for a check up.

The spring brings a new set of challenges for your pet's health.

"There are seasonal things that make spring a great time to get it addressed- things like Heartworm Disease where we have mosquitoes coming out probably in the near future," says Dr. Alicia Wisnewski, Veterinarian at Prairie Winds in Fargo.

For dogs on a seasonal preventive, Wisnewski says now's the time to be tested for Heartworm Disease.

"If they happen to have gotten exposed and the worms are developed enough, when we give a preventive, we can actually have reactions that can be quite severe," she says.

Mosquitoes won't be the only parasite out in full force. Ticks will be out too, carrying things like Lyme Disease.

"The preventives are our best, best bet with tick-borne diseases," says Wisnewski. "There's lots of others that we don't have vaccines for and so we want to make sure that we're using a really good tick preventive that will either repel or kill ticks," she says.

Wisnewski says standing water from flood run-off and melting can make dogs sick, so puppies who are puddle players should be vaccinated for Leptospirosis.

"As it progresses, you can see signs of nausea. It will further progress to vomiting, diarrhea, not wanting to eat, weight loss," she says.

Wisnewski says they'll ask a series of questions about your lifestyle to determine the best spring vaccines and preventives for fido.

She also says it's important for other animals - like cats or horses - to be looked at for diseases that affect them.
