UPDATE: Grand Forks Car Theft an Isolated Incident

Posted: Updated:

The Grand Forks Police Department has learned that the person of interest in a vehicle theft on Wednesday is a prior domestic partner of the victim. Shortly after 12:30 on Wednesday afternoon a woman called police reporting her vehicle was stolen from the Hugo's parking lot on South Washington Street. She also said her 5-year-old daughter was in the stolen vehicle.

After a short period of time, the stolen vehicle was located on the south end of Grand Forks unoccupied. A search of the area turned up the missing 5-year-old child. The child was checked out by medical personnel and appeared to be unharmed.

As police investigated, they found that this was an isolated incident that didn't involve a stranger, and the two people knew each other. The Grand Forks Police Department does have a person of interest and continues to investigate.

Three Grand Forks Elementary schools were put on lockdown, as a precaution, as officers searched for the suspect in this case.

Three Grand Forks Schools were on lockdown Wednesday afternoon, as a precautionary measure, as the Grand Forks Police Department searched for a suspect in a vehicle theft.

The school district says Grand Forks Police requested that Schroeder Middle School, Kelly Elementary School and Viking Elementary School go into lockdown at approximately 1:50 p.m., but for instruction to continue.

Police were looking for a suspect after a report of a stolen vehicle from a Hugo's parking lot. The police department says a child was reportedly inside the vehicle when it was stolen. The vehicle and child have since been recovered safely.

The lockdown at the schools ended at approximately 2:30 p.m., once the police department determined there was no threat to student safety.

No other information about the vehicle theft was immediately available, check back with Valley News Live for updates to this story.
