Fargo School Board Wants County Elections Back in Schools

Posted: Updated:

The Fargo School Board unanimously voted Tuesday night to send a proposal to Cass County leaders asking them to bring their voting sites back into Fargo schools for the upcoming June election.

"Lots of board members are supportive of having polling sites in schools, when we can make them secure and appropriate," says school board member Dinah Goldenberg. "Because, after all, it's a good educational piece for our students to see elections in action."

Cass County Auditor Mike Montplaisir told us earlier in the day that the school board had previously sent the county a letter saying the schools would no longer be available for elections, so school polling sites were never in the plan.

"Right now, for this year, our elections will be held at our regular polling sites," says Montplaisir. "The board has already had to designate those, and we confer with the city when we set polling sites."

Montplaisir tells Valley News Live he doesn't see county elections being held in schools anytime soon. He says a growing population means more people are voting, which means a need for parking space that schools cannot provide.
