Ring Dike Opponents Seek Federal Injunction

Posted: Updated:

Opponents are seeking a federal injunction to stop a proposed ring dike project around Oxbow, Bakke, and Hickson in North Dakota.

The ring dike project is part of F-M Diversion Project. The Richland-Wilkin Joint Powers Authority says if the ring dikes are built and then the diversion is not approved, those communities will be left with useless levees that were supposed to protect them from flooding caused by that diversion.

"It's a 70-million-dollar waste of taxpayer dollars," says Nathan Berseth of the Joint Powers Authority. "The only purpose of this is for the F-M Diversion solely, and it's a golden parachute for a select few in Oxbow."

The Joint Powers Authority wants the ring dike project halted until permit proceedings are complete and their previous lawsuit is decided. They say going forward with the project would violate state and federal law.
