Valley City is moving forward with its first phase of a $12 million project to protect the city to 100-year flood levels.
Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the city commission unanimously approved this first small project this week.
It now moves forward to the state water commission, which will need to approve the project and decide how much funding the state will provide.
If approved, construction could begin as soon as this year.
This first project would bolster protection around the Valley City State University area, between College Street and 5th Avenue Southwest.
