Sanford Health Celebrates Transplant Surgery Milestone

Posted: Updated:

Sanford Health in Fargo is celebrating a transplant surgery milestone. This year marks the 25th year that Sanford has been doing transplants in Fargo.

Doctors credit advancements in surgery techniques and better medicines that prevent the rejection of transplanted organs.
It's the perfect time to talk about transplant surgery, since April is organ donation month.

Many organs come from donors who have died, but about half of all organ donors are living donors.

(From Sanford Health)

A living donor is:

  • In good general health.
  • Free from diseases that can damage the organs, such as diabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or cancer.
  • Willing to donate and free from mental health problems.
  • Usually older than age 18.
  • A match with the person receiving the organ.

If you are interested in becoming a living organ donor you should contact the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) at 1-888-894-6361 or go online at www.unos.org to get more information and to locate the nearest transplant center.
