Ringing in the ears is a hearing condition that affects an estimated fifty million US residents somewhere between 60 and 75 years old. More common in men as compared to women, the main symptom of tinnitus is hearing tones that nobody else can hear. Tinnitus commonly seems to indicate a problem manifesting in one of the four portions of the auditory system – the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain – and for that reason could be more of a manifestation of other conditions than just a disease alone. Although it is not a form of hearing loss per se, it can be connected to other types of either conductive or sensorineural hearing loss. In addition, since tinnitus fills the ears with a regular base level of ever-present noise, it lessens the absolute threshold of hearing and causes it to become increasingly difficult to hear faint sounds “over” the constant buzzing or ringing.

Considering that tinnitus is such a prevalent issue in the United States, the audiologists at East End Hearing are regularly looking into new treatments. Tinnitus cure research is an extremely active field with many scientific studies and trials launched each year. Consequently, long-time tinnitus sufferers may not be always be aware of the newest solutions. Being able to offer the most up-to-date tinnitus treatment options locally in Long Island is a source of pride for the audiologists at East End Hearing. As part of that effort they’ve created a list of tinnitus therapies on their website and regularly blog about fresh developments in the area of tinnitus research. More information about the tinnitus therapies in the subsequent list is available on the East End Hearing website or by appointment.

Hearing aids. Most individuals with tinnitus have some amount of hearing loss. The dual benefit of hearing aids is that they cover the noises of the tinnitus while also boosting hearing ability. Most patients with tinnitus experience partial or complete relief from their tinnitus with the use of hearing aids.

Relaxation and Counseling. Learning how to relax is extremely helpful if the noise in your ears aggravates you. Stress makes tinnitus feel even worse. Counseling can be appropriate when tinnitus causes anxiety, depression or other psychiatric problems.

Maskers. Covering up (or masking) the noises of tinnitus can be achieved through an electronic tinnitus masker. Many patients report good results with tinnitus maskers even though they do not improve hearing the way a hearing aid does.

Medication. Drug therapies approach tinnitus on two different levels. They can address the strong emotions and anxiety that are common among tinnitus sufferers and work on directly reducing the symptoms.
