NDUS: Hackers Did Not Access Personal Data in Server Breach

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of current and former North Dakota college and university students can rest a little easier. The North Dakota University System says while hackers used its server to get onto other U.S. networks, they don't appear to have accessed anyone's personal files.

More than 70,000 files with social security numbers and other information were compromised during the breach earlier this year. The Chancellor's office provided an update today, saying the information technology department worked with the government to ensure that the compromised files were not used.

Forensic investigators helped the department discover the reason for the breach. NDUS Vice Chancellor of IT, Dr. Linda Feldner, says they've learned a few things along the way.

"Had we had a number of other things in place, such as intrusion detection, that would have stopped that," Dr. Feldner told the board. "Password changes more frequently would also have stopped it."

The University System is now rewriting security policies and procedures and updating user information.
