A plan to put a Cass County morgue in the former Sun Mart building on Fargo's 13th Avenue is moving forward for the consideration of the county commission.
A subcommittee gave the green light at a meeting today.
Before a location at the courthouse was set up in October, the coroners were working from their homes and cars.
Changing part of the space in the old Sun Mart building to a morgue will cost an estimated $400,000.
"I think it's a good project for the taxpayers. I'm not convinced we can get it done for any less anywhere else," said Cass Co. Commissioner Chad Peterson. "They have a project ready to go right now and I believe within the next year we'll have a permanent formal home in lieu of the home we have right now."
Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney was the only committee member to vote no on the proposal.
His concern was having a more central location for the morgue.
