Concerns Over Cars Driving In The Bike Lane

Posted: Updated:

Some people in Fargo are concerned about a fairly new bike lane along a popular road. The city approved a bike lane in the area of 7th Ave North and University Drive two years ago, and some drivers seem to ignore the marked off path on the left side of the road.

One person that lives nearby tells us it's not just this intersection that causes some confusion.

"I think it makes it more dangerous, because I am not really sure that motorists are aware of what the bike lane is there for," says Billy Potter, who lives near the intersection. "Since the bike lanes went in I have actually seen someone use it maybe three times."

Potter says he thinks bikers are afraid of cars are driving where they shouldn't, but adds that this is just the tip of the iceberg. "I think a lot of times it's because people who are used to driving the street here are used to it being three lanes. I think for the most part it's probably the driver-bicycle relationship."

Tom Smith of Great Northern Bicycle Co. is also part of a bicycle advocacy group. "There maybe is some confusion, certainly it's important that we are all following the rules of the road and getting along together. It's only through everyone following the rules of the road that we will be able to coexist on the streets," says Smith. "There have certainly been many studies that show cyclists are safest on the roadways, following the rules, behaving like cars."

Smith says some people could be confused on intersections like this because the bike lanes are relatively new to the valley.

"When motorists are not used to seeing cyclists it does create additional confusion. In fact, there have been a lot of studies showing that where cycling density is greatest, car-bike accidents go down, not up like you might expect, because they just become more comfortable co-existing," says Smith.
