Minn. Poison Control Says E-Cigs Making More Kids Sick

Posted: Updated:

More children and teens are finding out the dangers of nicotine. But it's not from a source that you would expect.

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigs poisoned just five Minnesota kids in 20-12 and that number jumped to 50 by 20-13 according to Minnesota Poison Control. Bills are moving through the state House and Senate that would restrict the sale of e-cigs to minors and prohibit their use indoors. But all too often parents don't know where to begin when speaking to their kids about electronic cigarettes because they're so new.

"We just wanted to make sure that people knew they weren't regulated by the FDA and we weren't promoting them as a safe quit tool or safe alternative," says Keely Ihry, of Clay County Public Health.

The use of electronic cigarettes doubled among middle and high school students between 2011 and 2012. If you would like to find out how you could speak to your kids about e-cigs check out the link below.
