MN Rep. Collin Peterson Will Run Again

Posted: Updated:

Rep. Collin Peterson (D - MN) will seek a 13th term in Congress.  Peterson was first elected to the US House in 1990.

He had remained quiet about his intentions until now, though many insiders believed he would run again.  Peterson made it official during an event Monday morning at the Moorhead Center Mall.

Republican state Sen. Torrey Westrom, of Elbow Lake, is also running for the seat.

Peterson has proven tough to beat even in a Republican-leaning district.  In 2012, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney won 54 percent of the vote in Peterson's district and Peterson swept to victory with 60 percent of the vote.

Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin released this statement about the announcement:

"Residents of Minnesota Congressional District 7, as well as rural residents across the nation, received great news today when Congressman Collin Peterson announced he is seeking reelection in November. He is a true champion for farmers and middle-class families as he demonstrated in his leadership of the recent farm bill.

"There will be a clear choice in this election between Congressman Peterson and his opponent, Sen. Torrey Westrom. Congressman Peterson has worked for opportunity for all while Westrom has a record of voting against a fairer tax system, preparing our children for future success and growing Minnesota's economy."

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which has targeted Peterson's seat as a possible pick-up for the GOP, says it's ready for a fight.

"Over his 20 year political career in Washington, Collin Peterson has lost touch with the needs of Minnesota families. Minnesota wants a new voice that will put their interests ahead of Barack Obama's reckless agenda. Collin Peterson may not be retiring on his own terms, but we have every intention of forcing him into retirement in November."
