UPDATE: Investigators Find Cause of Ethanol Plant Fire

Posted: Updated:

Fergus Falls fire investigators believe they've found the cause of a fire and explosion at the Green Plains Ethanol Plant Monday afternoon.

A release from the Fergus Falls Fire Chief says a hydraulic pump that controls the damper of the dryer stack failed.  When the damper failed to open it caused higher than normal temperatures at started a fire.

Fire officials say smoke from the fire was drawn into the dryer and caused a smoke explosion in the dryer building.

Green Plains is still figuring out how much damage will cost.

The plant has been closed since the incident.
