At Least 2 Dead in Manhattan Explosion

Posted: Updated:

At least two people are dead and more than a dozen are injured after an explosion leveled a five-story building in upper Manhattan Wednesday morning, sending flames and smoke into the sky.

You can see massive amounts of smoke billowing from the building in east harlem as firefighters douse the site. Police say between 16 and 20 people were hurt and others are missing.

It is unclear at this point what caused the blast, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time.  The explosion and fire also damaged neighboring buildings and caused a second building to collapse.

Debris, including broken glass from shattered storefronts, is scattered for blocks. Witnesses say the explosion was so powerful it knocked groceries off shelves of nearby stores. One distraught woman is trying to find out if her daughter is okay.

"My daughter in the corner. I want to know if my daughter is fine. I want to know if my daughter is dead or not."

The site is near the metro-north commuter railroad tracks. Service has been suspended to and from Grand Central while workers remove debris on the tracks.
