UPDATE: Woman Arrested in Connection with Tribal Councilman's Death

A woman is in custody after the death of Red lake Tribal Councilman Donald May. The FBI and Tribal Police are investigating the death of as "suspicious."

According to William Brunelle, Red Lake Department of Public Safety Director, his department received a 911 call just after 7:40 p.m. on March 8 about a shooting that occurred at a rural Red Lake residence.

Officers responded and discovered 58-year-old Donald May, Jr. with a gunshot wound. A female, age 47, was at the home when officers arrived and was taken into custody and faces charges of domestic violence, third degree assault and disorderly conduct in Tribal Court.

May served as a District Tribal Council representative for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. As a councilman, May was active in trying to re-claim tribal land.

The shooting incident remains under investigation by the Red Lake Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
