West Fargo Gated Community Proposal Moves Forward

Posted: Updated:

A new gated community within West Fargo city limits took a big step forward Monday night, with unanimous approval from the city's planning and zoning commission.

Several lots are being proposed within what's called the Stonewood Development, nestled on the Sheyenne River off of 32nd Avenue East. The proposal includes a six-foot solid fence.

Before Monday night's vote, the planning commission heard from people living in nearby developments. They expressed concerns to commission members and the developer and asked whether there is a need for a gated community in West Fargo.

"Everyone in West Fargo wants to feel safe, but I see we're building a safe community in our already safe community," says Austin Grueble, who lives near the proposed development. "I spoke to numerous residents and they all feel the same way as I do. We do feel safe, we feel like it's our home."

"I know it's a difficult, emotional thing. Changes are hard within a neighborhood. But I would just like to express that when you look at alternatives, this is the absolute best use of this land," says Mark Buchholz, development planner.

The planning commission's approval included that neighborhood concerns would be considered in detailed development plans. West Fargo's full commission must still agree to the proposal. That vote could come sometime in April, with construction beginning shortly after that.
