10 Crews Battle Fire in Downtown Mahnomen

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters from 10 rural departments responded to a fire in Mahnomen, Minnesota, this Friday morning. Mahnomen called in help from as far away as Detroit Lakes to the south and Fosston to the north.

It broke out just after 2 a.m. at a former barbershop on Main Street in the downtown area.

Mahnomen County Sheriff Doug Krier says they got a call from tenants living in the building who had smelled smoke. Some of the tenants were already out when the first officers arrived. Krier says officers were searching for a man known to be living in the basement, and finally found him outside of the building. No one was hurt and Krier says all of the tenants are now in a safe, warm place.

Krier says the building that's burning probably dates back to the early 1900s. He's been in it and says it's mostly wood, and expects that's why the fire burned so quickly. Fire crews say it took them about three hours to knock down the flames.

Krier says they believe an electrical short from a heater in a lower level apartment started the fire.
