Is There Buried Treasure In Your Back Yard? Experts Say Yes

Posted: Updated:

We hear legends about buried treasure, but what if it's in your own back yard? Last night we told you about a couple in California who went walking their dog, and found 10 million dollars worth of gold coins.

Now that might have you thinking, can you get that lucky in North Dakota?

Greg Olson owns Treasure Island Coins, and his favorite hobby is searching for buried treasure. "I think everyone has a little bit of treasure hunting bug inside them," he explains, "The thrill of finding something especially finding something, especially finding something old, the older the better."

Something like the coins found in California not common to find, but Greg has found plenty of things of value in North Dakota.  Some of the common finds in North Dakota have stories behind them.

"I found a merchant token from Riverview North Dakota, and I have never heard of it," says Greg. Good luck finding Riverview North Dakota on the map, Greg has done his research, and apparently it never existed. "I was just really surprised, and I thought this has got to be a rare one."

Finding history in the making, and returning lost property is one of Cortis Graff's favorite things. "Being able to return a wedding ring, or a wedding band," he says.

The experts say treasure hunting is as easy as renting a metal detector. "There's always what's under grandma's lilac bush, what's under there, there's always treasure under there," says Cortis. But, beware of private property, you must ask first before you go digging. "There are a lot of public areas to go, but you have to check the local laws," says Cortis.

Treasure hunting in the valley may not make you a millionaire, but what's in your back yard might just surprise you. There's another way to go treasure hunting, but from the comfort of your own home. A government website keeps track of property you may have lost or forgotten. Like un-cashed checks, stocks, or unused bank accounts.
