Xcel Customers Take Note Your Bills Are Going Up

90,000 North Dakota Xcel Energy customers are about to pay more for their electricity.

The North Dakota public service commission approved a multi-year rate increase structure for Xcel Energy on Wednesday.

The new rates will take effect on May 1st of this year and increase 4.9% for 2014 and 2015. The rate increase also affects an interim period from February of last year through May of this year. But Xcel Energy says that since the interim rate was actually higher than the final rate the typical customer may get a small refund for usage through May.

Xcel says despite the rate hikes the company's rates in North Dakota are expected to remain about 15 percent below the national average.
