Inspiring Young Chefs to Cook & Eat Healthy

American Heart Month may be coming to an end but that doesn't mean healthy eating and living has to.

The American Heart Association and Family Wellness Center are teaming up to inspire some young new chefs on how they can cook and eat, in fun, simple and healthy ways.

The Family Wellness Healthy Kids Cooking Program is designed to inspire kids ages 7 and up to make healthy food choices. They will be teaching them cooking skills like how to safely slice, chop, microwave, and more. All while preparing delicious and healthy recipes.

Kids can participate in the following healthy eating cooking classes:

Kids Cooking Class Series: 5 week program

  • Mondays, March 17th, 24th, 31st, April 7th, 14th at Oak Grove and Schlossman after school sites.

The YMCA will bus kids to the Family Wellness for the cooking program and back again. Kids will learn slicing, chopping, mixing and folding skills along with oven safety all while making delicious and healthy recipes from the American Heart Association such as: mini pizzas, chicken kabobs, rainbow waffles, mini meat loaves, and chicken enchiladas.

The class will meet from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. for kids ages 7 and up. Parents can sign up for the after school cooking program through their school site director.

Kids Cooking: Cheese-Stuffed Mini Meatloaves

  • Monday, March 10th 6:00 - 7:15 p.m.  
  • $9 members/ $15 nonmembers 
  • Ages 5 and up, 5-7 needs to be accompanied by an adult, up to 2 kids per adult

  • Wednesday, March 26th 6:00 - 7:15pm
  • $9 members/ $15 nonmembers
