2014 MN Legislative Session Starts Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Minnesota state lawmakers are heading back to the Capitol on Tuesday for the 2014 legislative session.

One of the big tasks ahead is what to do with a projected surplus of more than $800 million. That number could change in a few days when state finance officials release a revised outlook on Friday.

State leaders are not in agreement about what to do with the extra cash. Governor Mark Dayton, House democrats, and republicans in both the House and Senate like the idea of tax cuts, but majority Senate democrats want to build up the state's rainy-day accounts.

State lawmakers are also likely to take up the matter of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, and increasing the state's minimum wage.
