UPDATE: Water Lines Freezing in Detroit Lakes

Posted: Updated:

Our cold winter is causing more frozen pipe problems for local utility companies. Since Monday, the secretary for the Detroit Lakes Public Utilities Director says she's taken 61 calls from people in town who have frozen pipes and the problem could be more widespread than that.

She says there are just two businesses in the city of Detroit Lakes that will repair the frozen lines. The city is referring people to Prime Plumbing and Heating and Green's Plumbing and Heating to get their repairs done.

For everyone else in town who still has water, Detroit Lakes Public Utilities is asking all customers to run a small stream of cold water out of one faucet in their home or business.

City officials say they believe the increase in service lines freezing up is due to the cold weather and a deeper than normal frost line.

Because customers will using additional water you will be billed for their average usage from 2013 during the months of March and April to aid in reducing costs.

This notice remains in effect until further notice. If you have any questions please contact Detroit Lakes Public Utilities at 847-7609.
