Potholes Growing Problem Around The Area

Posted: Updated:

The mix of warm and cold is starting to cause some pothole problems for drivers in the area. The North Dakota department of transportation says the longer it stays cold, the worse the potholes are going to get.

People in the area are complaining about potholes damaging their cars.

"You start getting these nice warm days, and the water starts to run, and it runs in all the cracks and it refreezes, and it pops out our pavement, yeah it's just that time of year," says Kevin Gorder, with North Dakota DOT.

Throughout winter crews put chemicals down that make potholes even worse.

North Dakota DOT says there is not a whole lot they can do right now, so while you are out driving, brace yourselves, because these potholes are going to be out here until it gets a little drier. "When we get into may we can start buying better material," says Gorder, "So really that's what we are going to wait for."

It's too early to know if all the money and time they spent fixing I-94 last year is going to help. "We're hopeful that some of those repairs slowed down some of those potholes," says Gorder, "And got rid of some of those chronic potholes, but the pavement is over 20 years old, so there will still be some that pop up."

North Dakota dot has plans to do some extra work on I-29, but not until next year.

If you hit a big pothole, don't let someone else run into the same situation. Let the city know where the trouble spots are.
