Snow Angels Help Vets Keep Their Sidewalks Clear

Posted: Updated:

With the sun shining and melting some of the snow away many took Monday as a chance to scrape away the ice, but some people aren't able to do the work.

This is the third winter NDSU Army ROTC students have been volunteering their time shoveling driveways and sidewalks for a program called Snow Angels.

"I look at this and he's done so much for our country already." says Cadet Alex Fausti as he shoveled away.

"What we do in ROTC is we train leaders," says Cadet  so what it does for us is it teaches these cadets to be leaders, not only just military movements and things and leading military solider's, but it also teaches us to be leaders in the community."

Snow Angels is helped organized by the local VA Healthcare Systems bringing together those in need of help and the ROTC cadets.

"You see these chunks? I couldn't handle it." says Robert Fugere who was in the Army for over 20 years, "And I had a snowplow that worked then, now it don't because it's jammed, and I couldn't handle that stuff."

Usually it's just the cadets chipping away at the piled up snow, but one big helper showed up.

"I think we were hitting our end point there and couldn't get that ice, and it was just perfect timing and you cant ask for much help like that."

A Holland snow pusher came to help break up the snow at the bottom of the driveway

"Look at that oh wow haha." Robert laughs watching everything come together.

Although it's just a driveway and a few sidewalks, the cadets know its about their motto, to be Army strong.

"We're all one unit together, doesn't matter when you joined what's your branch whatever you know in the end we're all there for each other and I think that's the biggest lesson to learn." Cadet Fausti says with a smile.

"I'm thankful look at it!" Robert shouts.

This is one of many community projects the NDSU Army ROTC does. This winter, the teams are shoveling six driveways in the F-M area. If you are a Vet who wants to be part of the program contact your local VA Healthcare System and ask about the Snow Angels program.
