Pitcher Lacey Waldrop and host Florida State University shut out North Dakota State 5-0 in the final game of the FSU Renegade Classic played Sunday, Feb. 16, at JoAnne Graf Field.
North Dakota State (4-5) is scheduled to open against Nicholls State (3-7) at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at the University of Houston Invite. The Colonels play Southern University prior to the tournament.
Waldrop (5-1) recorded back-to-back shutouts for the 12/13th-ranked Seminoles against NDSU and allowed one run over 18 innings pitched. She struck out 10, scattered six hits and issued no walks on Sunday.
Florida State scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Celeste Gomez, Stephanie Hartness and Victoria East each had run-scoring singles. Courtney Senas' sacrifice fly and a NDSU error contributed to the five-run frame.
North Dakota State did threaten in several innings including the first when Alex Sobrero and Logan Moreland led off the game with back-to-back singles and moved to third on Cheyenne Garcia's sacrifice bunt. However, Waldrop worked out of trouble.
Sobrero and Moreland each finished with a pair of hits. Sobrero hit .438 over the five games with two runs scored, a pair of doubles and one RBI.
Tabby Bayers (1-3) matched Waldrop through the first four-plus innings before being relieved. Bayers allowed six hits, struck out four and walked three. Krista Menke struck out three and walked one over the final 1-2/3 innings.
The Bison defense turned their seventh double play of the season, one that involved eight exchanges and five players -- second baseman Garcia, shortstop Moreland, catcher Jenina Ortega, third baseman Jenina Ortega and first baseman Brandi Enriquez.
