NDSU Downs Chattanooga 28-10, Falls to Minnesota 35-3

The No. 20 North Dakota State wrestling team won its opening match of the EAS/NWCA National Duals against No. 19 Chattanooga 28-10 and fell in its second match to the No.1-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers 35-3, Sunday, Feb. 16, at St. John Arena.

 

In the first dual of the day, redshirt freshman Hunter Weber got the Bison an early 6-0 lead over the Mocs by getting a pin with 2 seconds left in the first period at 125 pounds.

 

NDSU senior Justin LaValle and third-ranked Steven Monk earned victories over ranked opponents for the Bison against Chattanooga.

 

LaValle scored two points late in the third period at 133 pounds to force overtime at 4-4 and then made a takedown in the first sudden victory period for the win over No. 11/12 Nick Soto, while Monk earned a 4-0 decision over No. 12/9 Corey Mock.

 

Tyler Lehmann earned his eighth pin in the nine duals he'd competed for NDSU this season, getting a fall at the 1:16 mark of the first period over Chattanooga's Scottie Boykin.

 

Bison senior Tyler Diamond won his fifth straight match with a 9-5 decision at 149 pounds, No. 11 Hayden Zillmer picked up his 10th win out of his last 11 matches with an 11-3 major decision at 174 pounds and No. 23 Kurtis Julson earned his sixth consecutive victory with a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds.

 

In the quarterfinals, the first-ranked Golden Gophers took control of the dual by winning the first five matches.

 

The Bison faced eight Top 10-rated wrestlers, with Monk earning the only points for NDSU by getting an 8-5 decision at 165 pounds. With the victory, Monk won his 19th straight match of the season.

 

NDSU (10-5) continues action at the National Duals in Consolation Round 2 at 10 a.m. (CT) Monday, Feb. 17, against the No.25-ranked Oregon State Beavers. The Bison and Beavers met once previously this year, with NDSU picking up a 19-17 non-conference victory on Jan. 19, in Corvallis, Ore.
