UPDATE: Large Home Move Put on Hold by Weather

Posted: Updated:
THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE:

Officials with a house moving company say bad weather will keep them from moving a large home from south Fargo to Rustad, MN.

A Travel Alert has been issued for much of the Valley because of high wind and blowing snow.

Workers tell Valley News Live the new plan is to try and move the home Wednesday February, 19th.

The home was bought out as part of the City of Fargo's flood protection plans and then auctioned off to a new owner.  The cost to move the home to it's new home is about $70,000.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Your commute to work Thursday could be affected in a big way by a moving house!

A number of houses have already been auctioned off for flood protection, and it's up to the buyers to take them off the lot. In recent months, several homes have already been moved or demolished.

One of the largest is currently sitting on a truck, scheduled to move Thursday morning, and it's no small task.

"You have to excavate around the building, and get it deep enough to get all this equipment underneath it," says Randy Jonas with Ehrlichmann Structural Movers, "and once you get that excavated it's just sticking beams one right after the other get it all rigged right and then just start jacking."

It can take about 6-8 days, but these moving pros say that's not the hardest part.

"Arranging. Escorts, power companies, cable companies, stop light crews, it's the worst part." Jonas says.

"You'd be surprised people that are driving that don't see a house that's in front of them until they are right on top of ya." Co-worker Seth Young says.

Weighing in at 230,000 pounds, the house is so big crews are worried about it fitting across bridges. It is 50 feet wide, 70 feet long and about 46 feet high.

They will start moving the home Thursday morning around 8:30. The home will go from 25th Street South to 52nd Avenue, then all the way across to Minnesota, on the round about and onto Highway 75. It's only 10 miles to Rustad where the home is going, but still quite a haul.

"Something this big about 5 miles an hour, that'd be flying." laughs Jonas.

Before the home can fit down the road four street lights, two stop lights, and a severe weather siren will all have to be moved. And if any trees are damaged along the way, the City of Fargo will charge $10 per inch.

Yet despite the difficulties crews say it's all worth it.

"People take a house that's going to get smashed and destroyed and save it!" Young says with a smile.

"It's recycling and it's awesome!" Jonas agrees.

The movers say 25th street south will have to be closed in some areas because the home is being moved in one piece. Crews say they should be out of Fargo by 10am if they don't run into problems.
