Auctioneers From Far And Wide Go Head To Head In West Fargo

Posted: Updated:

It's a sellers market in the cattle industry with buyers now paying a higher price for cows. Many in the business say they prefer to buy at livestock auctions when they can see the animals they are bidding on. But this business wouldn't be what it is without those who keep it rambling along.

"Some of the best auctioneers in the world are here today, there's a lot of ingredients that go into the successful auctioneer." that's being said from one of the best in the auctioneer business, Paul C. Behr the President of the National Auctioneers Association.

An auctioneer competition is loud and fast. Saturday around 30 competed to be named the 'Best Auctioneer' with a set of high standards.

"Voice and chant, salesman ship," says Shane Wolff who was entered in the competition. "You are judged on bid catching ability, and one of the main ones would you higher this auctioneer?"

But this profession isn't just about the fast talking and the sales they make.

"Its a wonderful profession," Paul laughs, "you know it's a people profession. We solve peoples problems they maybe have land for sale, or cattle for sale, and we turn those cattle or that land or cars or whatever into cash."

According to the Central Livestock Association this was the 24th Annual Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Contest.

The winners were:

1. Brennin Jack Canada

2. Jared Miller Leon, Iowa

3. Mitch Barthel Perham, Minnesota
