School Officials Concerned Over Sign Banning Guns

Posted: Updated:

(Chicago) - School officials in a suburb of Chicago are upset over the image of a gun on a sign that is meant to ban guns at schools. A new Illinois law mandates the familiar sign with an image of a gun with a red slash through it be placed at the entrances to schools.

However the South Town Star reports that many school officials are troubled by the image of the gun on the sign. The principal of Tinley Park High School Theresa Nolan told the paper she is concerned some people might "misinterpret" the image on the sign and that she would prefer something more subtle. The school district superintendent thinks the image can be frightening.

The Tinley Park assistant principal takes a different tact. He says the sign is a simple reminder that guns are not allowed within school buildings.
