At their meeting Monday evening, the Board reviewed the list of the six remaining names from their March 10 discussion, shown here in ranked order: Martin, Legacy, Heritage, Louise M. Dardis, Courage (T5) and The Wilds (T5). You can see more suggestions below.

After much discussion, the Board unanimously chose Legacy as the name of the district's newest elementary school that will be constructed west of Ninth Street West, between 50th and 52nd Avenues South, in the Wilds subdivision.  Legacy Elementary School is slated to open Fall 2015.

MARCH 10 UPDATE

The list of names for a new elementary school in West Fargo has been narrowed down. Since February 5, West Fargo Public Schools has been accepting school name submissions from the community for the school that will be constructed in The Wilds subdivision.

When the window closed on February 28, 198 total submissions (130 unique) were suggested for the new elementary school.

According to Administrative Policy JCA, each School Board member was to choose up to three names from the list of submissions. Their choices are as follows:

◊ Courage

◊ Diversion

◊ Endeavor

◊ Governor Art Link

◊ Heritage

◊ Justice

◊ Legacy

◊ Legendary

◊ Louise M. Dardis

◊ Martin

◊ Prairieview

◊ Rasmussen

◊ The Wilds

◊ Wild Flowers

◊ Woodrow W. Keeble

The Board will discuss these names at the board meeting on March 10. All names that remain after that discussion will be placed on a ranking ballot that each member will complete prior to the board meeting on March 24. The ranked list will be discussed and a formal vote will be taken at that meeting.

The school in Wilds Subdivision will be located west of 9th Street West, between 50th and 52nd Avenues South.

ORIGINAL STORY

West Fargo Public Schools is asking for public input as they work on naming the district's newest elementary school. Construction begins spring of 2014 in The Wilds subdivision west of 9th Street West, between 50th and 52nd Avenues South.

Through public input, they hope to give this school a name that represents the district. When submitting names the district asks that you consider the following categories:

  1. Individuals: A famous local, state or national figure who exemplifies courage, respect, honesty, tolerance or other admirable traits.
  1. Places: locations, landmarks or topographical features related to the school site, such as a street, historical marker, river or the community or neighborhood in which the school is located.
  1. Symbolism or a symbolic name: A word or words that capture the essence of the place or function of the school.
  1. Any combination of the above.

The suggestion period is open now through February 28. You can e-mail info@west-fargo.k12.nd.us or send input to: "Name the 10th Elementary" 207 West Main Avenue, West Fargo, ND 58078.

Once the submission deadline has expired, each School Board member will select up to three names from the list of submitted names. Members will rank these names individually and discuss those that rank the highest before voting. The district hopes to have the final selection in March.
