John The Olympian: USA Hockey

Posted: Updated:

The Valley Today's John Trierweiler is putting the spotlight on some of the most popular events of the 2014 Sochi Winter Games throughout the month of February.

Team USA participates in ten different winter sports.  John took on the sport of hockey on Monday morning (2/3) to see if he has what takes to join Team USA.

Being an Olympian, especially on USA Hockey, takes of lot of training. John learned it starts with a strict training regimen, stretching, rolling out muscles and balancing hand and eye coordination.

Puck handling skills is an essential part of the game of hockey. Fargo Force Athletic Trainer Phil Faught says a strong core is also critical for a hockey player. "You can't shoot a cannon out of a canoe, which means you have to have a strong lower body to be a good hockey player," said Faught.

A core workout and strong lower body is just the beginning of making Team USA. Olympic hockey players also have to master skating, shooting and having a good aim on the puck.

John struggles with these skills a little bit, so we asked the experts, "does he have what it takes?"

Fought smiled and said, "you're a work in progress, John." He added, "we'll get you there."

Fought says with four more years of practice... maybe John will be ready for the 2018 Winter Games set in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
