Salvation Army Asking For Help After Propane Costs Skyrocket

Posted: Updated:

After propane prices shot up this month many families are struggling to pay their heating bill. Salvation Army officials say they're not just those with low income even middle class families are having trouble paying a bill they had no idea was going to be so high.

Kayla Korynta heats her house in grand forks with propane. "Either we need to turn out heat way down or we need to find a way to pay," She says. But, over the last couple months she says the price has gotten so high it's about the same price as her mortgage payment.

"I don't know what we would do to be perfectly honest," says Korynta, "If it stays this way and it keeps getting high I would be at the point where we would by a new house."

Tai Clark over at Salvation Army has heard the stories. "Seeing the increase in costs has definitely caused a hardship on the families that we serve," says Clark.

Their heating assistance program helps families that can't foot the bill this year they have seen more people in need, causing the Salvation Army to burn through their funds in certain counties.

"Thankfully, our regional headquarters sent us an email," says Clark, "They were able to allocate an additional hundred thousand dollars across the state of Minnesota to focus on propane and fuel costs rising."

But many families still can't afford to heat their homes, but if you can The Salvation Army is asking for your help.

"Anyone that has been outside this winter it's a luxury that some of us have," says Clark, "Being able to go home to a warm house, so keep in mind that there are some of us that are really struggling."

People who heat their house with propane say the prices vary depending on where they buy it. But just to give you an idea, last year at this time in Grand Forks propane was around $1.25 a gallon, and now it's about $5.25 a gallon.
