Authorities sprung into life-saving mode while serving out an arrest warrant in the Bemidji, Minnesota, area on Tuesday after a suspect stabbed himself several times.

Sheriff Phil Hodapp says Beltrami County Sheriff Investigators and Special Agents from the MN BCA were at the residence of Virgil Lee Roy on Averi Circle NW, to serve an arrest warrant on Wendell Lee Olson who was a guest at the home.

Olson was wanted out of Carlton County for 3rd degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. When officers made contact with individuals inside the home just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Olson ran to a bedroom and barricaded himself inside. Officers heard the sound of a gun being slammed into battery and called for additional back-up officers.

Authorities were able to talk Olson into surrendering, but then discovered he had stabbed himself three times in the chest with a steak knife. Officers called for medical assistance and tried to stop the bleeding in the meantime.

EMTs from Bemidji Ambulance transported Olson to the Emergency Department at Sanford Hospital.  Olson is being life-flighted to Sanford Fargo for additional treatment of his self-inflicted wounds.

Virgil Lee Roy was also arrested at the scene on theft warrants from Becker and Beltrami Counties.
