Kids Playing with Matches Start Mobile Home Fire

Posted: Updated:

The Fargo Fire Department says a mobile home in north Fargo is a complete loss after a fire there on Monday night. Investigators say the cause of the fire was children playing with matches.

The fire was called in just after 5:00 p.m. Monday on the 1200 block of Monte Carlo Drive North, which is in the Riviera Heights Mobile Home Park. The fire started in a bedroom.

The cold posed a challenge for firefighters. They first hooked up to a frozen hydrant and had to find another before they could start putting out the flames.

"The first hydrant we went to was frozen so we went to a second hydrant which was about 800 feet down the road here," explains Assistant Fire Chief Leroy Skarloken.  "So we had to lay a lot of line. And now we're going to be dealing with hoses freezing up on us and stuff like that."

The home is a total loss.  Fire officials say it's important to keep matches, lighters, and smoking materials secured and out of the reach of children.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with short term housing needs.
