The North Dakota State University men's basketball team outscored Western Illinois 35-22 in the second half to break a halftime tie and earn a 65-52 victory in Summit League play on Saturday, Jan. 18, inside the Bison Sports Arena. The game was played in front of 4,284 fans – the largest home crowd of the season for NDSU.
The Bison and Leathernecks were knotted at 30-30 after the first 20 minutes, but NDSU posted a 23-9 rebounding advantage and committed just two turnovers after halftime.
NDSU improved to 14-5 and 3-1 in The Summit League with the victory. Western Illinois fell to 7-11 and 1-2 in the league.
Senior guard Taylor Braun scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Senior forward Marshall Bjorklund led the Bison with 15 points, and TrayVonn Wright chipped in 12.
WIU center Michael Ochereobia led all players with 18 points.
NDSU went seven minutes without making a field goal late in the first half, but a three-pointer by Lawrence Alexander and a jumper by Braun ended the drought and tied the game at 30-30 going into halftime.
The contest was tied at 44-44 with 12 minutes remaining when NDSU used a 17-6 run to take a 61-50 lead with under three minutes left. The Bison held the Leathernecks scoreless for two nearly four-minute stretches in the second half.
NDSU had 37-22 rebounding margin for the game and committed just six turnovers.
The Bison will travel to South Dakota State on Saturday, Jan. 25, for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Jackrabbits.
