Over 60 Local Teams Are Curling On The Lake At Pinehurst Resort

Posted: Updated:

The countdown is on only three weeks till the 2014 winter Olympics, and while many people are gearing up to watch them on TV there's more than 60 local teams trying their hand at an Olympic sport.

They are gathering at the Pinehurst Resort in Naytahwaush, Minnesota.

At first glance this scene might just look like the winter Olympics. Jeff Kolnes has been curling in this competition for four years in a row. He says it is not like the Olympics. "No," Kolnes says while laughing, "So if you went to the Olympics for curling how well would you do? Oh, we would be laughed off the ice, but we would have a lot of fun."

This is Team America, not the actual Team America, but good news, they won their game today.

"We did," says Kolnes, "But we have a long road to home before we are done with this whole thing."

Even if all these teams couldn't cut it as an Olympian they are still tough, tough enough to be out here till 1:00 AM in this chilly weather.

"It is kind of a family event," Kolnes says, "And it's something for us to do when it's 5 degrees out."

Most of the teams have been coming for four years. "What else are you going to do in northern Minnesota?

Dave Stedinger lives in the area, and he comes just to kick back and relax. "Just to have fun, Stedinger says, "Something different, I mean where else are you going to find something like this?"

He agrees that it's not the same as watching the Olympics. "No," Stedinger says while laughing, "It's much more laid back than that."

All decked out in their custom tee shirts ready to represent their family and friends, and of course have a good time.

"We try to pick some fun shirts every year," Kolnes says, "You know and just kinda go with it."

Even if it's not the real winter Olympics this Team America might still be on the road to victory.

If you want to try your hand at curling you can, everyone there tonight is hoping you will join them tomorrow at 8:00 AM at the Pinehurst Resort to throw the rock.
